Research Description
1. Biology of Schistosoma japonicum and its intermediate host,Oncomelania hupensi:mainly focus on the growth and development of S. japonicum, especially the cell culture of Schistosoma and Oncomelania in vitro. It was reported that a feasible methods and system for in vitro culture of cells from S. japonicumas early as1995. Besides established isolation protocols and morphological observations, media optimizations were conducted by using different chemical reagents, biological supplements and physical treatment. Among these, mutagens like N-methyl-N-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine and the addition of extracellular matrix were found to be able to induce mitogenic activities. Although enzyme activities or the level of silver stained nucleolar organizer region associated protein in cultured cells indicated still suboptimal conditions, the achievements made point to the possibility of reaching the aim of establishing cell lines for S. japonicum.

2. Interaction betweenSchistosoma japonicum and its host:mainly study the impact of host on the growth and development, egg embros and granuloma, gene expression and immune evasion of Schistosoma, also focus on the gene expression of O. hupensis after infected with Schistosoma and treated with molluscicide drug.
