Research Description
My research focused mainly on Schistosoma japonicum vaccine development, immune mechanism of parasitic infections, and the analysis and application of functional genes of Schistosoma. For example, cystatins are a family of cysteine protease inhibitors that play a crucial role in the adaptation of the host defense and immune evasion. We have isolated a full-length cDNA sequence putatively encoding a novel cystatin gene from Schistosoma japonicum. Semi-quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction revealed SjCystatin was expressed in egg, schistosomula and adult stages as the parasite mature. SjCystatin protein was widespreadly localized in nucleated cells of adult worm and mainly localized on the miracidium within eggs. Our further research results suggested that SjCystatin protein might play a important role during the immune evasion of parasitic worms.
