As one of seventeen major disciplines required by the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China (MOH) for medical education, Pathophysiology Course establishes a link between basal medical sciences and clinical medicine, through providing a foundation for studying in pathogenesis, cellular and systemic manifestations, clinical significance, prognosis, complications, and prevention of common human diseases.
Department of Pathophysiology, Wuhan University School of Basal Medical Sciences is one of the departments earliest established in Chinese medical schools. The department was approved as a master's degree authorization discipline in 1982, a doctorate authorization discipline in 1996, and State Pharmaceutical Laboratory-Pathophysiology Laboratory (TCM-03-129) in 2003. Currently, the department consists of 3 professors, 2 associate professors, 4 assistant professors, and 3 teaching assistants.
One of main goals of the Department of Pathophysiology is to offer Pathophysiology Courses to different levels of students including undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing education students. The Department of Pathophysiology was awarded “Excellent Course of Wuhan University” and “Excellent Course of Hubei Province” respectively in 2004. The Department of Pathophysiology also offers PhD and Master’s programs in Pathophysiology. In past decades, more than 40 students have received their Ph.D. degree and more than 150 postgraduates have obtained Master degree. 
The Department of Pathophysiology is renowned for its outstanding contributions in many scientific areas including cardiovascular diseases, neurosciences, molecular pathology of cancer, and metabolic disorders, supported by different types of foundation including National Natural Sciences Foundation of China, National Major Scientific and Technological Special Project for “Significant New Drug Development”, Trans-Century Training Programme Foundation for the Talents by the State Education Commission, Ph.D. Programs Foundation of Ministry of Education of China, New Teacher Program of the Ministry of Education of China, Excellent Youth Foundation of Hubei Province, Scientific and Technological Projects of Hubei Province, and Wuhan “Chen Guang” Project, respectively. Due to their outstanding work in scientific research, our scientists have published 66 SCI papers, won Hubei Nature Sciences Awards and Wuhan Prize for Progress in Science and Technology, and obtained 5 patents. Our faculties use a range of molecular, electrophysiological, behavioral, structural and functional approaches in transgenic mice or cultures cells to determine the mechanisms underlying human diseases. Because of their expertise with different approaches, many of our faculty members collaborate with each other or foreign scientists on integrated research projects. This enables our students to receive training in all these areas.
