1.Pathogenic Organism and Infectious Diseases Research Centre, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Wuhan University
Pathogenic Organism and Infectious Diseases Research Centre (POIDRC) has developed on the basis of the Department of Pathogen Biology, School of Basic Medical Sciences of Wuhan University. The center has always followed the needs of prevention and control of the national infectious diseases, and focused on the important pathogens, which cause serious damage to human health, such as HIV, Hantavirus, SARS, HBV/HCV, HPV, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Schistosoma, and etc. The center committed to conduct comprehensive research on molecular epidemiology, the mechanisms of pathogenesis and immunoregulation of the emerging pathogens, and on the diagnosis and developing therapeutic strategies on viral diseases. Basing on the academic accumulations, we have made outstanding achievements on delineating the pathogenesis of RNA viruses (SARS and hantavirus), establishing the animal model of HIV/HCV/TB co-infection, elucidating the molecular pathogenesis of tuberculosis, typhoid bacteria, Schistosoma japonicum and cryptosporidium parasites; illustrating the relationship between DNA viruses and tumor, performing basic and translational research on retrovirus-induced neurological and psychiatric disorders There are 20 professors and 23 associate professors currently working in the center, including 1 national "Thousand Talents program" expert,
2 National Distinguished Young Scholars, and 3 Wuhan University Luojia Distinguished Professors. Our professors are conducting research projects including "973", "863", the National Science and Technology Major Projects of infectious diseases, projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation, and etc. We have established a dynamic research group in the field of Pathogen Biology in China with explicit academic direction, profound research basis, multiple disciplines, and with rational team structure. 2.Hubei Provincial Key Laboratory of Developmentally Originated Disease, a multi-disciplinary research platform based on basic medicine, clinical medicine, preventive medicine, pharmacy and biology and so forth, was established at Wuhan University in December, 2013.
The Key Laboratory focus on three research direction, namely, the assessment of environmental risk factors during period of pregnancy, the pathogenesis and target of developmental diseases, and pre-pregnant and prenatal screening and eugenics. The Key Laboratory have succeeded in building a distinctive and competitive research team of developmental diseases, which has been achieving domestic and international advanced level. The pharmacology and toxicology of the team won the High Quality Courses and Key Courses of Hubei province in 2008 and 2009. In the year of 2011, the doctor and master degrees of the Drug toxicology has been approved by the National Ministry of Education. Two years later, the Pharmacology and Toxicology succeed in ranking 395 among the world top 1%. The key laboratory established the center of food and drug evaluation of Wuhan University in 2010 and undertook the seminar of the intrauterine adverse environmental and developmental disease of the National Natural Science Foundation. Finally, in 2013, the Hubei Provincial Key Laboratory of Developmentally Originated Disease was established.
The Key laboratory has brought together a group of outstanding, cross discipline young academic leaders and academic backbone in relevant fields. There are 2 members of the board of the national natural science foundation. There are members of the evaluation experts in both the State Food and Drug Administration and new drugs research of the National Ministry of Science and Technology. It is the elites in relevant fields organized by the laboratory research team that have obtained great achievements, namely 8 national science and technology projects, 3 major international cooperation projects of the national natural science foundation, and more than 250 SCI papers published articles. The team pays much attention on international cooperating as well; we’ve been work with experts in relevant field all over the world for quite long time. Among them are Professor Jacques Magdalou from Nancy University in France, Professor Charles Vincent Smith from Children Treatment Center of the Hospital of Seattle in US, Professor Yingfeng Hong from National Defense Medical College of America, and Professor Junyan Hong from University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
The developing Key Laboratory team, following the National Medium and Long-term Plan for Science and Technology Development, has been being devoted to the transformation study of developmental diseases and the international frontier problem about the development of health and disease. Moreover, by combine multiple subjects and promote the level of academic, status and international competitiveness of the Key Laboratory, we are striving to take a lead in the progress of the field of developmental diseases in the world.
3.Hubei Province Key Laboratory of Allergy and Immunology
Hubei Province Key Laboratory of Allergy and Immunology was built in 2005 based on the former experiment testing center of Medicine school of Wuhan University. In November 2007, after passing the three years’ construction period, the laboratory was evaluated as "excellence" by the Provincial Science and Technology Agency and Provincial Education Department. Teams of the laboratory are making great efforts to build a research center to study allergy and immune diseases which frequently occur and are common in China. Through teamwork, the laboratory conducts systemic and intensive work on the diagnosis and treatment of allergic diseases, infectious diseases, tumors, neurological disorders, autoimmune diseases, and other immune-related diseases. The laboratory also lays emphasis on the interplay of the immunology with other subjects and advocates transformation from theoretical research to clinical application. Furthermore, the laboratory has actively participated in fighting against major emergent diseases and contributed to life protection and global health improvement.
Hubei province key laboratory of allergy and immune related diseases brings together a group of outstanding and innovative young investigators. Among them, there are three winners of National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars, one “Outstanding Returned Overseas Scholar”, two national “973” chief scientists, two leaders of the major projects for special infectious diseases, three “New Century Talents” awarded by the Ministry of Education, one scholars of Hubei Province “Hundred Talents Program”, three winners of Hubei Province’s Outstanding Medical Academic Leader Program, two leaders of the project of Excellent Scientist Fund in Hubei, and four Luojia scholar professors of Wuhan University.
The laboratory aims to conduct original research, and to promote the basic and clinical study of allergic diseases, infectious diseases, tumors, nervous system diseases and autoimmune diseases. The laboratory also focuses on the technology innovation and the transfer of scientific and technological achievements, thus to improve our core competency in the related fields in China. During the last five years, we obtained support from more than one hundred research programs, including eighty national projects, two projects supported by the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars of China, three projects supported by the State Key Program of National Science Foundation of China, three 973 projects, two National Major Projects, more than fifty General Programs of the National Science Foundation of China, and twenty projects supported by the foundations of The Ministry of Education funds, Hubei Science and Technology Bureau, Hubei Health Department, etc.
The laboratory have published nearly two hundred papers at domestic and international journals, 150 of which are collected in three major International Search Systems. Moreover, the laboratory has been authorized twenty invention patents. Three lab members were awarded as the Medical leading talent of Hubei. Three postdoctors, graduated from Harvard University, Creighton University and University of Kentucky respectively, were introduced as backbone leaders for the young. With strong competitiveness and vitality, the laboratory has come to the top of the field. Devoting to education, research and health care, the laboratory is now serving as an important medical research center to provide top-notch training and advanced technical support for the immune-related diseases in China.
